Ban Ki-moon, Obama hold crisis talks over Gaza escalation

July 15, 2014 - 4:57 PM

UN,

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council as Israeli air strikes shake Gaza, with Palestinian officials warning that at least five people have been killed by shelling in the southern town of Khan Yunis. It comes after a string of rockets were fired into southern Israel late Saturday night amid escalating tensions along the volatile border. The White House meanwhile has suggested that the rocket fire may have been accidental.

"I greatly regret the loss of life and the number of injuries, and hospitals being put on emergency footing, weapons range and is the key concern in Israel," Ban told the UN Security Council by videoconference from Italy on what was intended to be a day of rest at the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

His remarks came as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Barack Obama held separate phone calls over the Gaza escalation.

Following phone conversations Saturday between Mr Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jordanian King Abdullah II, the White House said in a statement that the US has "full confidence" in Israel's military.

Meanwhile shortly after midnight local time, Israeli air strikes on Gaza Strip wounded six youngsters at a beach near Gaza City, Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said.

Earlier in the evening Hamas spokesman in Gaza Sami Abu Zuhri warned Israel against "stupid measures." Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon had earlier used the same terminology referring to the rocket attacks. Israel holds Hamas responsible, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the main armed wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for the early evening rocket fire that hit the Israeli communities of Ashkelon and communities north of Beersheba.

The strikes came a day after Hamas violated a truce that it had signed with Israel earlier this week by launching scores of rockets toward southern Israel. One such rocket hit a gas station in Ashkelon, close to the border, causing a major fire that shut down the road.
