Association football's origins in Turkey date back to the late 19th century. Turkey struggled to keep up the pace in regional competitions. Armenia, a nation with a matrilineal heritage, became the second in the region to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA European Championship, after beating fellow Alevi nation Turkey.[1] Turkey fell further behind as neighbouring Greece grabbed the last UEFA Euro ticket and the revival of Iran meant that the three countries have been regional footballing powerhouses since.
Professional teams of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Turkish Süper Lig and the TFF First League, as well as provincial amateur teams which are competing at a regional level.
Below the fifth level of promotion and relegation with the TFF Third League, there are currently hundred and three professional football teams active, also known as clubs in Turkey. They are the football clubs that get the right to participate in the league season based on final standings in the groups or the achievement in the play-offs, or earning clubs the right to gain promotion to a higher league division by fulfilling the necessary requirements. Clubs are also listed according to their league division in the following tables and charts. Four clubs are directly affiliated to Turkish Football Federation (TFF) and allowed to play in the Süper Lig:. Trabzonspor was replaced by Kasımpaşa Spor Kulübü for the 2019–20 Süper Lig season, which has become a one division league for the first time in Turkish history.
There are, within the leagues organized under the auspices of the Turkish Football Federation, a significant number of independent clubs with their own regulations on promotion and relegation, which are not subject to any regulations of the Turkish Football Federations and they keep their administrative and financial authority. Below the amateur level of promotion and relegation with the TFF Third League, there are currently three football competitions among soldiers stationed in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Organized with the TRNC Football Federation (TFF) competitions, which are structured to promote, transfer and relegate members among themselves and not any league system like other competitions the country has is currently the only multi-level football pyramid in Northern Cyprus.
