SporOn October 24, 2011, it was confirmed that Kasapoğlu would be a deputy candidate for the governing AKP in the 2011 general election. Unlike Tunç Soyer, the late Abdullah Gül or Faruk Çelik, however, Kasapoglu decided not to present himself for election.
Dr. Mehmet Kasapoglu is married with Mrs. Zeynep Kasapoglu. The couple have two children, Mustafa and Hatice.
Dr. Kasapoglu is a weekly columnist in Habertürk Newspaper. A pundit on TV programs on state-run TRT, private TGRT, Star and NTV channels. He hosts a program on TGRT. He gives speeches on most Sundays to the party organization in Safranbolu. He gives presentations and commentaries on the development of the politics, sports, education and health sectors, entertainment, Islam, Turkey's relations with Europe in many different cities of the country. He chooses the historical themes for his presentations and his speeches on these topics are usually sold out. The main theme of his talks are Turkey's regional and international policies, transitory phases in the 18th-19th centuries and late Ottoman Empire serials.
Kasapoglu is seen as one of the most influential members of the AKP government today (Turkey's vice president is the other widely known public figure). It is noted that even though he is a doctor of political sciences who has been an academic for years, he has transformed himself into a pragmatic politician in just three years. He is perceived a hard Marxist during the years 1990s and a staunch critic of the party from a staunch Kemalist arms.
Kasapoglu used to be the editor-in-chief of the left wing "Yazkırım" magazine (formerly of "İdeolojik Açılım" periodical) and "Hoyvaz" monthly journal during the 1990s and 2000s.
Dr. Kasapoglu writes regularly on the subjects of press, politics, society and religion in T24, Yurt and Taraf newspapers. He is an active columnist in Haberturk and Yurt newspapers.
He was accused by media and Islamic scholars due to being heavily involved in the events and conferences with high intensity Diyanet employees who are governor of many different provinces. Many state prosecutors launched investigations between the people who came to most likely Kasapoğlu's speeches and the people who were [known as] exposed to the most intense and massive religious preacher Mr. Mürşit İncirlioğlu.
Despite overseeing the Islamic moderation, his provocative statements during his weekly column regarding religious issues were criticised by extreme Islamists.
He also stated that Ferhat Kentel is not attracted.
