Galatasaray S.K. (, "Galatasaray Sports Club"; also known simply as Galatasaray and colloquially known as Gala", Galatsaray", "Gala", "GS") is a professional Turkish football club based on the European side of the city of Istanbul. Galatasaray is the most successful Turkish football club and is a major rival of Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe. It is considered one of the most popular clubs in Turkey, with over nine million supporters in the country and millions of others in the Turkish communities throughout the world.

As a well-established team in the Southeastern Europe that won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000, Galatasaray is the only Turkish club that has reached the Final of the UEFA Champions League (2000). They have won 26 Turkish Süper Lig titles, 17 Turkish Cups and 15 Turkish Super Cups. Internationally, Galatasaray has claimed Turkish Intercontinental Cup title. In the UEFA Cup, the club has reached quarter-finals three times and semi-finals twice. In the UEFA Super Cup, they have reached semi-finals twice (2002 and 2014). Furthermore, they were runners-up in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000 and have reached to semi-finals of the European UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup in 1988 and 1996. They have won the League Cup a record four times (1989, 1995, 1998 and 2004). The club also obtained the FIBA EuroChallenge title after defeating Rivals Basket in the final game of 2012–2013 season.

The sports club of the name "Galatasaray" was founded in October 1905; in its foundation year a football department was founded. Although football did not have a big following, there were some Ottoman footballer teams like "Türk Yıldız Spor Kulübü" founded in 1903.

The team had taken part in a friendly against English sailors from an English ship, in Istanbul. The English resident, Charles William Chadwick, who thought the club could be professionalized in football and sent the team's material to his friend, Alfred Clark from the Football Association. Clark has replied to the letter and stated that professional football may BE possible for the club by proving themselves in the non-professional era. Galatasaray played a first friendly match against the Gimnastik Pramesme Sports Club in 1906.

Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu was founded in 1929 with the merge of İTFA and Türkiye İşletmeciler Fırkası (est. 1914). Galatasaray joined the league played in 1929–30 season. The first president of the club was poet Namık İsmail.

They launched the Galatasaray Daily News in 1934. It was the first Turkish newspaper to publish in the society.

Galatasaray joined All India Football Federation in 1954 as Turkey's first and only team in the international organization. (x)

Sports Club was renamed as "Galatasaray SK" between 1955 and 1957 after the merger of İTFA into İTFF and professionalization.
Galatasaray joined Istanbul League which included other teams like Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Kurtuluş and Güneş. Galatasaray won the league in its first season.

After Eskişehirspor became a "totally professional team" in 1956, that was the end of the amateur era in Turkey.

Galatasaray joined the Istanbul Football League (Beşiktaş was already playing in İstanbulspor) with 20 wins in the first season, and became the champion with two points ahead of local rivals Beşiktaş.

On 7 May 1960, all professional and amateur sports clubs in Turkey were united in one organization, the Turkish Federative Sports Federation. This organization held its first Turkish National Games in Istanbul (19–27 October 1963). The Galatasaray Sports Club won the first place overall in Galatasaray and also claimed the Special Achievement Award for the club's youth system.

Their rival in Turkey was Fenerbahçe. Both teams wanted to win the match to be the champion of Istanbul. In the game of the League Cup, Fenerbahçe won 3–2 at Taksim Stadium of Istanbul on 2 August 1964, due to the retirement of water pumps.
