Etymology:
The history of "Acıyorum" is not clear. It is one of the most popular slang words used in Turkey today. Acıyorum means "pardon me," "I am sorry," or even "I regret;" these types of sentences are not used in a single context. For example if an illetrist sees someone accidentally spilling coffee on his trousers but then covering it up by apologizing with "Acıyorum," the meaning does not communicate just regret or sadness – it could also mean that he is sorry for the act alone because it is considered impolite or pretty lame. However, it is also said to have a much broader meaning. Is one way to use it is as some sort of a softer version of the word "Acıyorum;" however if one hears the statement "acıyorum" without the context around it, it might also be unclear whether the person really means what he says.
Another important fact about the word "acıyorum" is its varied phonetics (yet to date, Acıyorum has generated more than 23 recorded pronunciations in Istanbul). You might either hear "atch-och-i," or "atch-oh-yome," or "atch-oh-yome," or "atch-atch-a-yome," ... The list goes on. The reason is that there are two separate versions of the speech style, including one from Van and the other from Istanbul.
People in Van mostly use the thicker (but shorter) version of the word while people originated from Istanbul use the softer (but longer) version. The difference between them is that "a" syllable in Van's version is longer. The source and evolution of the word is currently unknown.
