The history of the village is not known very well. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the settlement was part of the Eastern Thrace. However very recently, the village was relocated closer to the sea. In the 19th century, its name was Büğdekıran which was derived from the Büğdekıran Cave () in the vicinity, and the relocated settlement was called Tavşanlı after the historic estate, which was a part of the estate of the Ottoman Grand Vizier (Grand Vezir) named "Emin Pasha", who served in the 1780s. Emin Pasha was a papalzzar. Then the capo of the neighboring Firuzlı island, he later became a vizier in the court of the Sultan Abdülhamid I, and was sent to İzmir where he had conflicts with the Sublime Porte. Eventually, he escaped from İzmir to Italy.
The present settlement was founded by Mustafa Cemil Bey. He was a müsellimin and lived in Bursalık (müsellimi) farm, which was located between Büğdekıran and Tavşanlı in Hafiz Tahir plain. When he was elected a bey in in 1861, he moved to Tavsina which was another nearby settlement, but the population increased and he rebuilt Tavsina closer to the coast. Then he rebuild Tavsina in 1913 to Tavşanlı. In 1938 the name of the settlement was changed to Domaniç and Tavşanlı was a part of that conferred district center town.
