Greece – Turkey:

Between 1966–1977, the number of Greek Cypriot residents of the north declined by 362 persons (-3.3 percent) whereas the number of Turkish Cypriot residents increased by 1,956, resulting in an overall decline in the Greek Cypriot population of 2,308 persons (-5.5 percent). Thus, whereas in 1960 there were 157,454 Turks ("Turks" excluding the Turkish Cypriots) and 59,555 Greek Cypriots in Northern Cyprus, ten years later in 1970 the analogous figures were 155,109 and 53,413, representing gains for the former and losses for the latter of 12,037 and 8,206 respectively. In 1977, when the total population had reached 250,059, Turks formed 73.9 percent of the population and since then, so that according to the latest figures of census, in 1981, Turks formed 76.5 percent of this population. As a result of the Turkish Cypriot immigration and the Turkish populating policies in the Cyprus, which changed the demographic structure of the island turning the favorable ratio in favor of Turkey into an unfavorable one, the ratio of the Turkish to the Greek Cypriot population and the overall ratio of the Muslim to all Christians in the island took a shift unfavorable to Greek Cypriots. Turkish Cypriots are the only Muslims in the region who are citizens of a recognized state, i.e. the Republic of Cyprus, the government of which still denies the Turkish Cypriot people a fundamental right of citizenship. Furthermore, at the Akritas plan, as the facts proved afterwards, they had the intention to reduce the total number of Turkish Cypriot residents down to 300,000 what had its own undesirable consequences for Turkish Cypriots. Moreover, Muslims throughout the region, and particularly in Turkey, Turks and Kurds continue being arbitrarily arrested, tortured, subjected to disappearances and extra-judicial executions, as was evident in the perpetrated crimes especially during 1988-1996 on thousands of Kurdish individuals and Turkish oppositionists as well of Turkish origin, in Turkey.
