Breaking the siege [of Kobanê], it appears, hinges on Turkish cooperation.

Activists have scrambled to find paths to Turkey, an essential border crossing, as the siege of Kobane began. With no land routes possible, they focused on the border town of Suruç, Turkey, just next to Kobane, under the control of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“Because we respected Turkish borders and will continue to do so, we were not able to cross into Kobanê, a part of Syrian Kurdistan lying on the far side of the Turkish border, and report on developments there,” Belge told me. “For this reason, I established ‘the Coalition to Break the Siege of Kobanê through Turkey.’”
