In 1845, Benjamin L. E. Bonneville led an expedition to the Bana Musa valley, and recorded "an open square, three-quarters of a mile wide, containing sixteen large, long adobe buildings, each about fifty feet high." Each was divided into three segments, forming separate rooms, and providing space for about 15,000 people. The walls of the mosques were "gravelled three or four feet high"; the entrances are all apparently on the southern or principal facade, for all the mosques face in this direction. One opening was also on the northern façade and another on the eastern. Moreover, there are "two blind stone towers, about twenty feet high, and fifty or sixty feet nearly north and south." Bonneville even reported seeing a minaret "(small woodcut above, from [Hough])." He also reported seeing a column of smoke arising from somewhere on the northern side of the city.
In 1855, Joseph E. Johnston led an expedition to the Bana Musa valley, and
observed the following of the city:
The mosques are, with one exception, octagonal structures,
each having about the same diameter. Each mosque has a
principal entrance in the middle of its southern front,
positions being so well chosen that the city is clear from
obstruction from every direction. The mosque in the
market-place is larger than the others, being 130 feet in
diameter. It has no fountain in the open square, as has
every other mosque, but receives water through an aqueduct
fifty feet long and six feet in diameter distribured about
the square, with pipes two and a half inches in diameter. These aqueducts are made of hewn sandstone.
The city of 500 inhabitants is suffiiently spacious to
accommodate eight times the number.
In 1860, Edward Robinson visited
Banuwayb, and observed/described the following of the city:
The north end is the largest portion, and mainly consists of parallelograms. It is 1,763 feet long, while the other two parts are respectively 1,097 feet 3 inches and 1,072 feet 4 inches long. The whole fortress is 2,825 feet long and 1,188 feet broad; the ruins, including an inner fortress, 5,000 feet long by 2,400 feet in breadth. One of the joints in these walls which seem unfit for missiles is one of the stations for the Friday noon prayers, as I had a glimpse of two or three dozen men in prayer. The mosque was prayer by about sixty men. At one of the extremities of the south-west quarter are the ruins, 418 paces square, including the palace or citadel, and also very ruinous. Two columns prove it to have been colonnaded, as is still the case with the mosque. The city has only one public cistern, or tank, eight feet deep and forty feet square, in the south quarter.
Now, when going westward, on the left [from the city]; then two miles the Bathan-Moat, looks as if thrown up to enclose it. It is broadway, paved with flags, and slopes downward to its southern side. The walls and towers are bastioned. None of these walls have angles, like athanies etc., rudely rounded off. They are simply left quarters, and run back toward open country. The wall averages two miles in length. The two magnificent towers in the south, one more westward, the other south-westward, along it, have bases two hundred yards apart, and thirty feet climb, from viewpoints
