 ALAADDİN KEBABİ'DEN BULUŞMA
Bu yazıyı yazdı ve yayınladık.
A suburban café by day, a diner at night. This restaurant has rarely been photographed and is seldom known, but of the many Aladdin restaurants that have graced the streets of Istanbul,  few are as enduring as this one - that is if it indeed is the original establishment. A typical 24/7 joint in a low-key neighborhood on the European side of the city, Aladdin Kebab is immediately identifiable by (symbolically?), both the placed & mounted lanterns, and the absence of outdoor lighting. Since the lack of external lighting in alleyways was to indicate that the area is off limits to outsiders, it seems reasonable to assume that the dirty yellow glow shining inwards from outside is also symbolic - to indicate that Aladdin Kebab was never meant to be photographed by outsiders' mugs in the first place.
On to the food. The kebab (the undisputed and must popular specialty of the place) are standard fare of chunks of lamb and barely cooked offal all held together on an upright skewer char-grilled to completion. There's also a lamb casserole version served under heat steaming aluminum plates. Other preferable options include steak and boiled chicken mostly available as takeout meals for those with the tardiness to get-out-of-bed-just-for-dinner. The rest involves what is largely unfamiliar grub such as the Islands Pizza featuring thin pizza slices with the generic and equally unidentifiable smell of mozzarella cheese, other predictable pizzas aside from Hawaii or California with the satisfactory crusts to boot, such as the pizzas Manakish, Besalada, and the Gigante portion of fries with a bizarrely tasty keeper of ground beef, parsley, garlic and cooked egg - bringing to thoughts that the patties with the fries should have been named "Figs With Mayo".
The three restaurants that make up the Aladdin Kebab trio along with Dino (the Parisian one) lead the way and shape your standards for kebab establishments. Aladdin remains, and will most likely remain, the corner stone to them all, be it in quality, service, and/or prices. Tanimul Wasfy
