ABSTRACTS of National Records in Football of Turkey

This abstraction contains all the international appearances and goals since 1891 of Turkey national football team until October 1, 2010.

Before the Turkish Football Federation was founded, the T.U.F.F. (Union of Turkish Football and Baseball) formed in 1911 in Istanbul hosted several football and baseball clubs and Turkey played its matches. The T.U.F.F. hosted the Turkey national football team's first and second against the Ottoman officials. The T.U.F.F. later joined to the T.F.F. (Turkish Football Federation), which was established in 1923 after receiving permission from FIFA and the Union des Societies Francaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA) earlier in the same year.

The Turkey national football team played since its first international appearance against Romania in 1923 and were invited to join the European Championship in the beginning. However, the Turkish team had not qualified for any major tournament yet. Turkey played in the Eurovision Song Contest 1956 when they were the semi-finalists and hosted in 2002. They did not fully qualify for their first world cup until 2002, and they have been ever since.

In 1938, Turkey played against the Soviet Union for the first time.

After 1930, Turkey participated mostly in international friendlies and invitational tournaments, playing occasionally in the Balkan Cup (formerly known as Balkan Nations Cup), Tehran Tournament, Central Asian Games, Mediterranean Games, Near East Cup and South East Asian Games.

The magnificent 1950s side that beat England twice and nearly caused a sensation in the World Cup had faded and the fallen Empire was no longer ready to fight the giants of world football in the coldest years of the Cold War.

In these years, Turkey suffered a lot of financial trouble which worsened its performance. Their win against Albania in the Balkan Cup upset Greece and an eventual final suffered from allegations of the match fixing and political turmoil.

Trade with China had further exacerbated the problems. In summer 2009, during a period potrayed as the "darkest Turkey had experienced in many years", head coach Ertugrul Sağlam was forced to bring in ten players on loan from Beşiktaş J.K.. He explained the move as down to insufficient depth on the roster and injuries, which left Adem Koçak, coach of Ziraat Bankası S.K., as goalkeeper Cüneyt Çakır as the only players, able to play on a cold rainy night in Rize.
On 26 October 2010, Mustafa Denizli, coach for Eastern Thrace, the eastern sub-region of Turkey joined the national coaching staff of Turkey when they played a 0-0 with Krygyzstan.
