Carrboro transforms into all-ages punk fest|

Concert fans born before 1980 might remember paying $5 to see hardcore
bands at “all-ages punk shows.” That was the deal here in 1981 when I
strolled into a Tasty Freeze in Carrboro with a dollar bill and bought an
entire acoustic set of the all-ages punk band Sourpuss. The dime-store guitar
plucking and acoustic bass-playing caused an older man with short
dark hair to turn and smile at me. It was Mike Watt, only for a moment in time,
but later I would end up interviewing him when he wore the black “U.S.

Prophet” hat and was Iggy Pop’s bass player.

And so, fast forward to today. The professionally produced PUNK SATURDAY
MALlday showed all generations of punk aficionados could enjoy performances
by bands whose parents were not even born when punk started. The floor
beds set up for young or old concert-goers to lie on added with the
samurai-like punk t-shirts by Carrboro-based Punx Unite banished any fear that
punk had seeped into mainstream sellouts. 21+ or otherwise, one ticket got
those that wanted to enjoy 12 bands in one day – plus a 1950s revival.
The Miracle, Hotline, Taker, The Dead Lights, Sannhet, The Fever (from
locally traveled Raleigh), Black Cross (and it is okay to assume I know
more about them), Down In A Hole, (eighties with the black shirts/tapes
lateral angular graphics flag logo) and UNHOLY ROTTING’s Evil Plot.
The large turnout might have been a surprise to the organizer who ran
from one side of the stage to the other to stage-whisper a comment to me
that the show was going to over-capacity. But, she proved everyone wrong,
with excellent stagescapes and level of sound. I did love the massive
mirror-style mosh pit after each utterance of “Siouxsie and the Banshees”.
