Nazan Öncel ‘in yeni keşfi “Sade İnsanlar”

İSTANBUL (İHA) - The restored Elgin Marbles are on display at Istanbul Modern for the first time in 40 years since they were sent to the United Kingdom.
Beginning tomorrow and until May 8th, the Elgin Marbles are on trial at Istanbul's contemporary art museum, which boasts uninterrupted views of the Bosphorus.
This exhibition will showcase the 14 statues of Classical characters – Dionysus, Venus, and still life sculptures of Bacchus and Silenus – that were removed from the 2,500-year-old Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the early 1800s and later removed to London.
Providing long-awaited dialogue on the bright colors and salvaged marbles, this iconic exhibition has been in the pipeline for seven years.
The artist Frank Stella opened the exhibition by lighting candles. The Parthenon marbles were purchased in 1816 by Thomas Bruce, the seventh Earl of Elgin, who served at the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire to Britain, on behalf of the British Museum. When Greece acquired independence in 1832, Lord Elgin ensured that the Parthenon sculptures, which he argued were bought on the condition they would be displayed in the British Museum, would remain exactly where they were.
In 17th and 18th century, the Victorian era, the Romans and Greeks went as heroes and liberators in Europe, and Lord Elgin's act was applauded. Seeking to remind everyone that they are still in possession of the Elgin Marbles from Athens, the British Museum invited the Greek Minister of Culture, Mr. Dionysis Voulgaris to London who held out for their return and received support for their repatriation at the time.
