'The semi-centralized, non-democratic, bureaucratic government, by means of commonly agreed procedures concerning the attribution of responsibilities and of resources, shall ensure the legal protection of civil and political rights.' That is found in the 1972 Sudan Constitution, which is still in force. The current national census, conducted in 2008, estimated Sudan's population at 36.2 million. So are there that many Sudanese practicing polygamy? Arrests under the country's Islamic law are carried out by those known as Combating Vice police; in recent years the authorities have come to regard circumcising young girls and executing gays as part of their job description.

How many Sudanese are men, how many are women, how many are men who are men, how many women married to men legally taking more than one wife? I do not know the normative proportion of polygamists to monogamists in Muslim or African communities.

Still, the aerial campaign of genital mutilation of young girls would seem to be a cruel, totalitarian imposition under Article 19 of the Arab Charter on Human Rights, of which Sudan is a signatory:“(1) Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference.

(2) Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.” Monogamy is all about the continuity of fathers and sons. Polygamy is about the continuity of forefathers and sons. By insisting on the former, instead of the latter, we create conditions in which polygamy flourishes.
